Currently, powder metallurgy has been widely recognized by the industry as a green and sustainable manufacturing technology. It offers significant advantages in four aspects: functional sustainability, material sustainability, energy sustainability, and environmental sustainability.
(1) Functional Sustainability The forming capability and material utilization rate of powder metallurgy are very high, minimizing overall energy consumption. Compared with traditional processes such as casting or forging plus machining (hot working + cold working), the powder metallurgy process requires fewer steps to produce the same part, even for those with more complex procedures.
(2) Material Sustainability The forming capability of powder metallurgy is one of its main advantages. For example, when forming a toothed part, traditional machining processes can turn up to 40% of the material into chips. In contrast, 85% of all powders used in powder metallurgy are produced from recycled materials. During the production of powder metallurgy parts, scrap loss in each process step is typically 3% or less, achieving a material utilization rate of up to 95%.
(3) Energy Sustainability Traditional manufacturing processes generally require several heating and re-heating steps to form a part. In contrast, when producing steel or iron powder via atomization, the scrap steel only needs to be melted once. All other hot working operations are carried out at temperatures below the melting point, which not only saves energy but also allows the material to achieve the desired shape, properties, and mechanical performance. Comparative studies show that the energy required to manufacture powder metallurgy parts is only 44% of that needed for forged-machined parts.
(4) Environmental Sustainability Due to the forming characteristics of powder metallurgy, parts are typically finished directly after sintering and can be packaged and delivered immediately. In most cases, the amount of cutting oil used in processing powder metallurgy products is negligible, and the release of toxic pollutants from cooling water and other sources is also very low. Compared with other manufacturing processes, the powder metallurgy parts industry has almost no harmful impact on the environment.
