MIM (Metal Powder Injection Molding) is a near-net-shape forming technology for manufacturing high-quality precision parts. It involves mixing metal powder with a binder, granulating the mixture, and then injection molding it into the desired shape. The dimensional tolerance of MIM products is typically 0.3~0.5% of the injection-molded product size.
MIM technology offers advantages that conventional powder metallurgy, machining, and precision casting cannot match. The dimensional accuracy of MIM products is primarily influenced by factors such as mold precision, injection process parameters, and debinding and sintering shrinkage. Generally, the net-shape accuracy of MIM products is designed to be within ±0.5% of the dimension, with some features achieving ±0.3%.
In the MIM process, the final product dimensions must account for sintering shrinkage. Shrinkage rates vary across different material systems, with typical shrinkage for stainless steel and iron-based materials ranging from 15% to 20%. Therefore, precise shrinkage compensation must be calculated during mold design.
In actual production, MIM is particularly suitable for components weighing less than 100 grams, with parts under 50 grams offering greater economic advantages. By optimizing process parameters and mold design, it is possible to achieve mass production of metal components with complex shapes and high precision.
